policies's Issues

Table of contents links won't work if special characters present

I've noticed some links in the table of contents contain charaters like commas, slashes, brackets etc.
These result in non-functioning links. Examples include:

https://github.com/digipres/policies#james-hardiman-library,-nui-galway
https://github.com/digipres/policies#national-library-of-new-zealand-/-archives-new-zealand
https://github.com/digipres/policies#royal-pavillion-&-museums-trust--(brighton-and-hove-museums)

I only picked up on this when working on #2 and noticed that the preview had a few dead links.
I'm not sure what the best solution to this is!

Branches are being overwritten on being pushed

It is unclear what is happening yet, but branches are being immediately overwritten when pushed - as @kieranjol points out here, it seems to begin with a failing check on push (it passes in PR state) and then rolls back the commit. A failing check shouldn't result in an incorrect commit being written back into the repository.

NB. while Caylin is listed as the submitter, this is just an automated push. It may also be a clue.

TODO:

  • Check github actions and remove any "write" behavior in the action if it exists.
  • Look at why Caylin's previous commit is the one being automatically rolled back to.
  • Look at the branch protection rules, but check if necessitating passing checks is causing this conflict?
  • Look elsewhere if it's not clear.

Community requirements discussion: how do we make this repo more sustainable?

The first three public commits to this repo have all being incompatible with the anticipated workflow which was to edit a CSV (as a low barrier of entry) and then have a script do the following:

  • extract the csv into two components, front-matter and csv,
  • use the csv contents to create an alphabetized table of contents,
  • output a markdown file in three formatted sections, front-matter, contents, and data.

But the scripting is brittle as I describe here: #9 (comment) and we have seen in the other commits.

What are the actual community needs here?

  • Simple to update?
  • Is CSV easier than Markdown?
  • Something else?
