Which says authentication succeeded, but no mail arrives.

Your discussion plugin version is outdated. I pushed to this commit 45ae595 a few months ago to re-enable the notifying function for current DokuWiki versions.

I had hoped that clicking on the “update” button in the “Manage plugins” page (which I did before reporting this) would get the latest version.
Is the version you suggest above scheduled for release?

Bother. Not used this interface before. Clicked on “Comment & Close” expecting it to make a comment and close my browser tab!

If you installed the plugin by pasting https://github.com/dokufreaks/plugin-discussion/zipball/2009-08-22 into your plugin manager, then DokuWiki will check the same URL for updates after clicking on the button. But the package behind the link will never change.

You could delete the plugin and re-install it with url https://github.com/dokufreaks/plugin-discussion/tarball/master
This address always serves the latest version.

Thanks. Having deleted the plugin and reinstalled it with that URL, enabled subscription to comments in discussion settings, it seems to work.
This time I do mean to click the comment and close button.
