ES5 should be able to do all this without using jQuery. prompt(element, message = '', defaultValue = '') and status(element, message, options = {}) should be enough. The functionality of jQuery.fn.statusDisplayer could be implemented by having status have a Symbol.iterator generator method that returns the two functions.

In fact, we should just have one function that acts as prompt if defaultValue is set, or something like that.

Making those into jQuery plugins would be easy:

$.fn.prompt = function(message, defaultValue) {
  return prompt(this[0], message, defaultValue) // could set this.data ('prompt.promise', p); if it seems useful
}

$.fn.status = function(message, options) {
  return this.each( function() { status(this, message, options) } )
}
