In this course, we will cover the fundamentals of synthetic control estimation and inference, with special emphasis on actionable guidance for applied research. We will discuss seven crucial guiding principles for empirical studies using synthetic controls and how these principles are applied in practice. Towards the end of the course, we will change topics to address “the” FAQ of econometrics office hours: When and how should we cluster standard errors?

Synthetic Control

This set of lecture materials will introduce the synthetic control method and its application in empirical research. We will discuss the guiding principles of synthetic control estimation and inference, and how these principles are applied in practice. Then, we will discuss how to conduct inference using synthetic controls, including the use of placebo tests and permutation tests. We will discuss a generalization of synthetic control via the penalized synthetic control method. Finally, we will discuss how to design experiments optimally when planning on using synthetic controls for estimation.
