mp3's Issues

Choosing mini-project 3 topic

I think we should do topic 1 for the following three reasons:

  1. It would be interesting to work with elevation data
  2. We can be creative with how we classify the trails by taking into account length of distance, time and elevation.
  3. Creating elevation profiles and learning how to classify trails will be interesting

Let me know your thoughts!

How we measure trail difficulty

The following variables are important in how we measure how difficult a train is:

  1. Elevation gain (finding the min and max of the elevation)
  2. Distance of trail

We need a formula...debating between net elevation or average elevation

rgdal package masking proj4?

My r seems to be acting funny. It doesn't seem to like the combination of the two packages above. Any suggestions? Is this happening to you guys?

Drawing from Shenandoah Trail Rating System

"Elevation Gain x 2 x distance (in miles). The product's square root is the numerical rating."

we could use net elevation multiplied by trail length, then take the square root of that to standardize it, figure out a ranking system from there?

Problem Statement

How can we classify the trails in MacLeish as "Easy", "Moderate" and "Difficult" in a simple and accessible way by interacting the variables of length and elevation?
