Bridging to Mosquitto 1.4.2 fails with "Invalid protocol"

I've configured a bridge:

bridge.tcp.tiggr = 127.0.0.1:1883
bridge.tcp.tiggr.cleansession = off
bridge.tcp.tiggr.client_id = vernemq0
bridge.tcp.tiggr.keepalive_interval = 60
bridge.tcp.tiggr.try_private = on
bridge.tcp.tiggr.topic.1 = owntracks/# in 0

I then enabled the plugin

vmq-admin plugin enable -n vmq_bridge

and restart vernemq. Upon startup, vernemq connects to Mosquitto which reports:

1432936475: New connection from 127.0.0.1 on port 1883.
1432936475: Invalid protocol "MQIsdp131" in CONNECT from 127.0.0.1.
1432936475: Socket error on client <unknown>, disconnecting.
