FAQ

Can I resize the width and height of the popup?

For the width, yes, by dragging on the left (or right for RTL systems) edge of the popup. For the height, no, because it resizes automatically based on the bookmark tree height. Note that Google Chrome sets a maximum limit of 800x600 on extension popups.

Can the "*" shortcut key be changed to some other key?

Yes! The key can be changed by going to Chrome > Settings > Search > Manage search engines > Search engines added by extensions.

Why not use a better (more native-looking) toolbar icon?

There is a difference between Chrome's default toolbar icons and extension's toolbar icon. Chrome's icons are basically simple glyphs and shapes to indicate the purpose of the toolbar action. They are simple and dynamic, in a way that can change colors based on the current theme applied. As for extensions, the icon doesn't just indicate purpose but is also a form of branding which sets it apart from all the other extensions. Also, extension icons are not dynamic and don't change based on the theme applied. So, if the extension icon contains just one color (black or dark gray, like the default icons), it won't be able to adapt when you choose a theme with totally different colors. However, Neater Bookmarks provides a way to replace the default toolbar icon with a custom one in the Options menu.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to open Neater Bookmarks (popup)?

One can be added by going to the Extensions tab and clicking the "Configure commands" link at the bottom of the page. In the popup, type a keyboard command (such as Ctrl+B) in the box next to "Neater Bookmarks". The keyboard command will open the popup with focus on the search box; typing will immediately search bookmarks while pressing the arrow keys will navigate the bookmark tree.

Does Neater Bookmarks support Google Bookmarks?

No. There are no plans to support it, because it's lacking an official public API and Chrome already has its own bookmarks system with Sync. There are several existing Chrome extensions that support Google Bookmarks.

How do I report bugs or suggest features?

Preferably via the issue tracker or [email protected]. If you're reporting bugs, please include at least the version/build of Chrome and your OS.

Why isn't this built into Google Chrome by default?

No idea. That's why Neater Bookmarks exists.

Technical Details

Neater Bookmarks was powered by MooTools, but is now powered by Neatools, a custom-coded smaller subset of MooTools. CodeMirror is used for the Custom CSS section.

Popup goes to max width when folders opened the first time

Mac: Window auto resizes from Max to smaller size

awesome work on this, one of my must have extensions for Chrome!

On to what appears to be a bug for me:
When opening the bookmark window, it opens at max size then autoresizes down to something around 300px or so. This is odd because the tree size is very large so it should not be resizing down at all. If I open a folder it figures this out and resizes the window to the max size.

Replacing the default bookmarks page with a neater one !?

cannot match bookmarks by key words other than from the beginning.

Can't match bookmarks from letters by key words other than that begins from the very first!!!
ex. input "gm", "gmail" shows in the list; while input "mail", nothing appears. So, It is a bug and hope to be fixed.

in the results list, press arrow DOWN, the first choice is selected.
In the earlier versions of NB, press DOWN, the second is chosen.
Personally, I think the earlier versions is more intuitive, as the first match can be executed directly by press ENTER and there is no need to select the first match.

Crash when building popup - neat.js line ~392

I believe it's resolved in 40d35e5. Will keep the case open for a little while longer to verify resolution with v0.9.6.

Mac: Open bookmark in background tab closes popup

On OS X, checking "Middle-click or control-click opens bookmark in new background tab (instead of foreground)" on the Options page and opening a bookmark properly opens the bookmark in a background tab. But, it also accidentally closes the extension popup (unlike Windows and Linux). The popup should stay open if bookmarks are opened with this option turned on.

1. Down key pressed on last item in tree.

No way to cancel an edit

When editing a bookmark, there's no cancel button in case you don't want to save the changes you make to the bookmark. Also, Esc doesn't cancel, but rather saves the changes. There's no way to cancel your changes in the edit dialog.

Usage / enhancements

I'm fairly new to Chrome, came from Firefox. I'm trying to duplicate what I had on Firefox. 1. Return me to the last bookmark I selected from list which NB does very well. 2. Sort a folder from the list, it seems the only way to do that is from the manager. 3. Move the NB icon to the left side of the address bar or add it to the bookmark bar, have not been able to find a way to do either.

Allow Neater Bookmarks to live in sidebar

I believe this isn't currently possible. See this Chromium issue.

Right-click folder context menu option to add current page as bookmark

It'd be nice if you could right click on a folder and have the option to add the current page as a bookmark. It'd be even nicer if you could set whether the bookmark is added at the top or bottom of the folder in the options.

Popup does not stay open when left clicking a link

As stated in the title: popup does not stay open when left clicking a link. At one time this was working but stopped. Liked this feature because it enabled me to open a lot of links without having to open Neater Bookmarks more than once.

No line shown when dragging an item between folders

When dragging an item (folder or bookmark) between 2 folders, there is no line indicating the "dropped" position of the item; a line is shown if at least one bookmark is next to the "dropped" position of the item.

Feature request: an option to make popup stay open forever until the user click the button again.

I would like to suggest an option to make popup stay open forever until the user click the button again.

For example, I click the Neater Bookmarks button, and the popup showing the bookmarks will stay open (no matter what I click or do), the popup will only close if I click the Neater Bookmarks button again.

I put the button as the right most button and it works like a bookmark sidebar. I would greatly appreciate it if it can stay open forever,

I have already ticked [Popup stays open when opening (left-clicking) bookmarks] but the popup will close when I click something on the webpage.

Linux: Large bookmarks folder needs scrolling

The pop-up usually doesn't fit well with folder with 30 or more bookmarks and there is no way to scroll it down/up, so some bookmarks are hidden and unaccesible.

Adding new bookmarks , DUH !

So , adding a new bookmark and/or folder and/or subfolder ,with , a BOOKMARKS extension , is not possible !? ( btw i still rated it 5 stars ! )

I have been using Neat(er) Bookmarks for a long time and I have been very happy with it - I test out others every now and then but always come back to NB. I have thousands of bookmarks and an extensive bookmark tree but quite frequently forget what part of the bookmark tree I have saved a bookmark to - having the display for the parent folder helps but what I really need is the full set of parent folders ie the full path of the bookmark.- can I offer you a payment to extend the Parent Folder facility?

Add ability to create new folders

A right-click within the extension popup should allow creation of a new folder by an "Add folder..." option.

Clicking on a folder creates a new child folder, and clicking on a bookmark creates a new folder at the same level as the bookmark. This replicates the existing functionality of Chrome's included Bookmark Manager.

Alt-Enter in Omnibox should open bookmark in new extension

I love this extension, but I've noticed that when I'm searching Neat from the Omnibox, choosing an entry with Alt-Enter replaces the current page, as opposed to opening the page in a new tab, which would be the expected behavior. Is there a way to address that, or is it a limitation of the Omnibox API?

Opera support

Since version 15, Opera is Chromium based. It's maybe a good thing in long term, but we loosed a lots of features, like almost everything bookmark related.

Since version 20 (?) we have Bookmarks bar (as in Chrome), and all the necessary API, but it is just not good enough.

The good news is, Neater Bookmarks in its current form (without any change) is working perfectly.

Would you be interested in making the support official, and adding it to the official extension database?

Linux - tooltip obscured by popup

I just updated to GC Version 35.0.1916.114 on Fedora 20 x86_64 and now have this problem - it doesn't appear there is a fix from options . .

I am talking about the obscuring of the extension's bookmark path that I used to be able to see quite happily - ie what is being obscured is what you normally see when you hover your mouse over the link displayed in the extension.

Add sorting feature

Add recursive sorting on a folder RMB menu.

Sort by name is logical and useful. Anything else? Sort by... bookmark creation date?

"Oops, error happened, this has been reported to the developer"

So could you fix this please or at least make it invisible? Cuz it doesn't affect any functions it just overlays extensions like annoying advertisment, (happens like in 30% cases after you leave browser open for a while and don't click bookmarks icon)

Remembering open folders

Hi,

Thanks for Neater Bookmarks - very, very useful extension. I only have one niggle:

I like NB to remember the top level 'Bookmarks Bar' folder in it's open state, but any sub-folders I open I'd like to have close automatically after using a bookmark within one of them. Is it possible to have a 'remember open / closed state' setting on a per folder basis?

Scroll position isn't saved

For some reason the scroll position isn't being saved. It always goes back to the very top after clicking on the Neater Bookmarks icon. I do have enabled the "Remember previous state".

I'm using Chrome version 21.0.1180.41 beta-m on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Add reset for icon

Once a custom icon has been selected, there is no reset. The only option is to grab the default icon from the extension's installation folder.

Update needed for Simplified Chinese translation

I have finished the Simplified Chinese translation on WebTranslateIt, but it has still not been merged into the code. I wonder to know if the translation have some problems that make it cannot enter the master branch.

Double scrollbars using medium size fonts

I installed Nearter Bookmarks on a new laptop and I am seeing the double scrollbars problem that the old Neat Bookmarks had. It only happens on this laptop, and the only difference I see with my other computers is that here I have set up Windows 7 to use medium size fonts instead of the regular size.

Popup height incorrect when opened on secondary display

When popup is opened on primary display, the height expands to the max defined in neat.css (530px). But when the window is in the secondary display, the popup height is limited to 200px as defined in neat.js (line 398).

Edit One detail which might be significant: my secondary display is configured below my primary display. I'm not familiar with Javascript, but maybe this messes up the the window.screenY value on line 397.

Win: Scrollbar goes away with small Chrome window size

Hi, thanks for your great extension. I am trying to step over to Chrome from Firefox (because of the speed difference, though I do like Firefox better other ways). One thing that really annoys me about Chrome is the bookmarks functionality. Your extension though is the next best one I've found till now. Kudos for that!

Only one thing; why isn't there an option to open up folders by hovering? I think that hovering is much smoother than having to click on folders...

use Google Bookmarks instead of local chrome bookmarks

it would be great if the extension could use the online google bookmarks (https://www.google.com/bookmarks) service rather than the local chrome bookmarks.

Google bookmarks dont offer a public API but other extensions where able to achieve that. The GUI of neater-bookmarks is much better though...

Can't open bookmark in new tab with left-click and keep popup open

The following options don't play nicely together:
Left-click opens bookmark in new tab.
Popup stays open when opening (left-clicking) bookmarks.

If those options are both turned on, a left click should open the bookmark in a new tab while keeping the Neater Bookmarks popup open. The popup closes, but the rest of it works fine.

"Rename" a folder, don't "Edit" it

Chrome's Bookmark Manager uses the term "Rename" when right-clicking on a folder and using the feature to change the folder name. Right-clicking on a bookmark uses the term "Edit".

Make Neater Bookmarks conform to Chrome's nomenclature, which is also more descriptive.

Puzzling missing search results

Hi,

I'm quite fond of Neater Bookmarks (after having used Neat Bookmarks previously), because it helps me to easily access bookmarks in a large amount of folders and sub-folders. But, recently I've noticed some searches don't display the expected results, and I can't figure out what is causing it.

While for many searches typing a few letters is enough to get results in the popup box other bookmarks don't even pop up when I type an entire word. For instance, when I type 'hor', multiple results pop up,(as expected) with words like 'author' or 'short'. When I type 'rec' I would expect the same for both bookmarks with the word 'recipe' and 'recept' (the Dutch translation of recipe), but the first don't appear until I type 'reci' and the second group doesn't even appear when I type 'recept', In a similar way, nothing is shown when I type 'hos' or 'hosting',.even though a search in Chromes native bookmark manager shows six bookmarks that have the word in their title.

At first I thought, Neater Bookmarks had problems with nested sub-folders, but then I found out that some of the bookmarks that are not displayed when searching for one word, will be displayed when I search for another word in the title. For instance, a link to my web hoster has as title 'A Small Orange - Homegrown Hosting'. Neater Bookmarks does find this link when I search for 'homegrown' or even 'hom', but not when I search for 'hosting', 'small' or 'orange'. For completeness I've tried capital first letters as well, also without.result.

I'm fairly sure that some of the words I used effortlessly in the past, now lack any result, which makes me wonder if something has changed that is extension related, or if my current Chrome version (33.0.1750.29 beta-m) is to blame.

Has anyone experienced similar problems, and is there anything I can try to fix them?

I want to donate this icon.

Hi guys. I want to donate this alternate icon I made, real quick. It's based on the default chrome bookmarks icon, and I made it to match the "extensions button" and "downloads button" extensions that currently reside on my browser bar. Basically, people who want to use this icon will be able to fool themselves into thinking Neater Bookmarks is native feature of Chrome, and don't we all wish that were true! :)

Hide empty "root" folders

If a "root" folder has no bookmarks under it, such as Bookmarks Bar or Other Bookmarks, hide that folder in the bookmarks tree. An option should be present to enable or disable this feature.

Error when no results

When the search does not give any results, pressing 'down' or 'enter' will throw "Oops, an error occurred.".

I'll post a fix.

Add ability to change default search character (asterisk) to some other character. In the Czech QWERTZ keyboard, without a numeric block of keys, asterisk is not fast character to type and switching the keyboard layout to English takes time and is inconvenient.
