exchangejs-org's Issues

Member survey

So that we can understand who are members are, and how we can best serve the local community, we need to send out a short member survey that we can share at the March 3rd meetup.

  • draft survey
  • send out survey for review
  • finalize survey
  • share survey with members
  • close survey and compile results

Decide on objectives for 2016-17

Now that the exec has been selected, I propose we start the next year by reviewing the feedback from our member survey and selecting objectives to focus on over the next year.

Our final deliverable would be:

  1. A statement of our overall mission
  2. A list of objectives we're going to do this year

To accomplish this, we need to:

  • review results of member survey
  • review results of sponsor survey
  • brainstorm our mission
  • agree on mission
  • brainstorm possible objectives
  • agree on objectives for this year

Create a package for presenters

This is intended to improve the quality of our talks. It could include things like tips and a checklist for our presenters, as well as some resources like presentation templates and logos for the meetup.

This issue is created as part of #51.

Fix our favicon

Our current favicon is illegible. We may need to make a new file from scratch, but luckily it's just "ejs" in black on a yellow background so that shouldn't be hard.

Record talks

Starting September 2016 we'd like to record our meetups for broadcast to our members live and offline later.

Better educate by increasing the quality and audience of our talks

The possible ways we've come up with to achieve this objective include:

  • provide a short speaker guide
  • provide talk templates (reveal.js w/ Markdown, Google Slides)
  • share a talk schedule with at least two talks for the length of the year
  • provide 10 minutes of newbie content at each meetup
  • record and share talks (#28)
  • enforce time limits for all talks
  • provide speaker's practice and feedback
  • poll members for speaker ideas
  • track metrics for talk quality and audience size
  • OTHERS?

Setup global repo for all monthly meetups

We decided to setup a single repository we can use for all monthly meetups. This repository will include:

  1. Slides for all meetup notes
  2. An issue for each meetup

The pro's of doing this are that we can eliminate the duplication of work and resources between months, and use an issue template to help with planning them. It also means that there is only one repository you need to check out to access all past talks. The con's of doing this are that it's possible older slides might stop working if some of their dependencies are changed without archiving older versions of the CSS and JS. I think we can all live with this though.

Adopt a Code Of Conduct

In person communities always benefit from a code of conduct, to encourage good behaviour and diversity. I propose to adopt this:

http://confcodeofconduct.com/

And just rename 'conference' to 'exchangejs' . We can then link to it each meetup.

Create a survey to understand sponsors

If we're going to attract sponsors we need to know who they are, what they want, and amount and type of support they can provide.

This doesn't need to be fancy, but it would be useful to have results by the start of July so we can plan over the summer.

Create a sponsorship package

Deliver a one-page PDF we can send to sponsors. It should describe:

  1. What the meetup is
  2. Our mission
  3. Who our members are
  4. What we're going to do with the money
  5. What you get for sponsoring
  6. Our sponsorship levels
  7. How to donate

Exchange.js Mascot

A lot of my favourite projects and communities have great mascots (Go, Linux, Android, etc.) Is anyone interested in designing a mascot we could use on the website, stickers, twitter, etc?

ExchangeJS Conference in Edmonton

I would like to organise a conference for Javascript related topics. I would aim for either May or September. Has anyone ever done that and what would you actually want one in Edmonton?

  • Team up with StartUp Edmonton to help with the orga
  • We could use the ExchangeJS page for Conference details and Eventbrite to sell tickets.
  • Shaw Conference center as venue
  • Call for proposals
  • Catering
  • Flyer, Poster, Online advertisment

What do you guys think?

Upload index.html and related files for hosting?

Hi Mark: not sure if you're just planning to upload the existing index.html right now or planning to do something more complicated (like Jekyll) right off the bat.

Once we have something in this repo I can re-assign the DNS. (I can also move what I have online now in here as the starting point.)

Setup expense approval spreadsheet

The expense approval sheet should be used before items are expensed to get approval for the expense from the exec. As discussed, to be approved an expense must be:

  1. Declared in advance of the purchase
  2. Approved by a majority of the exec
  3. Noted if it's a one-time or recurring expense

After the expense is approved, the submitter should either a) pay and then talk to the treasurer about getting reimbursed or b) arrange for the treasurer to make the payment directly. Please email the treasurer an electronic copy of the receipt (a photo, email, etc.)

Propose a budget

We need to work out a budget for the next year so we know how much money we need to raise to achieve our objectives for the year.

Archive old repos

Poll members for speakers

We're trying to reach out to the broader JavaScript community and connect Edmonton with developers and designers who are shaping the way we work with JavaScript now and in the future.

With this in mind, we need to poll members to see who they'd like us to try to connect with.

This could be tool makers, developers, inspirational figures, academics, entrepreneurs, etc.
