eyebeam.org's Issues

Content issues

This issue is to track how to "do content" properly. We can add things here as needed.

Some of the images are blurry

From Joanna:

Do you know if there are specific specs for these? Mainly resident images on /residency page and the /event images

I haven't adjusted the image sizes, but maybe I should, maybe bump the large/medium sizes to be larger? And then we can batch resize everything to the new dimensions. Of course if the original upload is not high enough resolution, the new larger sizes won't really help.

Here are the settings as they are set now:

  • Thumbnail: 150 x 150 cropped
  • Medium: 300 wide, as tall as necessary
  • Large: 1024 wide, as tall as necessary

Basically I use thumbnail for staff profile images, medium for 1/3 width modules, large for hero images, 1/2, and full width modules. We can also define additional sizes, if that helps fix specific instances in the layout.

Lazy Load Glitch

On the lazy load pages there is a glitch that makes the webpage inch upwards by itself. I attached a screen recording zip. This happens on /ideas /events.

Donate page testing

Okay, the donate page is pretty much working now, for some minimal definition of "working."
http://staging.eyebeam.org/donate/

I presently have it in "testing" mode, which means it will only work with Stripe's test credit cards.

Basically you should be able to make a donation of any amount (weirdly, though, it rejected my attempt at a $1 donation, who knows...) with the following:

  • Number: 4242 4242 4242 4242
  • Expiration: 11/20 (I think this is arbitrary)
  • CVC: 111 (also arbitrary)
  • Zip: 11111 (this too, also arbitrary)

Remaining issues:

  • Disable the form while the submission is still loading (re-enable it on error)
  • Come up with better feedback on success/error? Open to suggestions.
  • Hide the form when the donation is successful. What should they see at this point?
  • Send an email to somebody (what address?) upon success (also on error? could be helpful or annoying.)
  • Test that it actually works in "live mode."
  • Stretch goal: auto-subscribe to the "donors" list in Mailchimp

Images (am I beating a dead horse)

IS there a way to have featured images automatically resize so we don't have the issue of uneven photos displaying on a page? I know this has been discussed, I'm just revisiting because I can't remember where we were ( sorry :/ ) . This would be ideal on /ideas /education /events /people and the homepage.

Resident links

Could you make the resident links that go to their webpage open the link in another page or add that feature in the WP editor.

How to keep people clicking through?

Use tags/ categories to create 'related content' at the bottom of event and ideas. Use 3 content blocks and images at the bottom. Module at the bottom of the post in WP backend.

Move Live Site Changes to Version-Controlled Site

Here are two items that I've changed in the code through the editor on Wordpress that should be moved to the version-controlled site:
• In style.css: commented out image-background and made background white
• In footer.php: commented out old Jerome Foundation Logo image link and added new image link

css_change

footer_change

font rendering

some of the fonts look a bit blurry on chrome.
I've found that this helps:

-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased;
-font-smoothing: antialiased;
-moz-font-smoothing: antialiased;

Sub-pages shouldn't show the date in the sidebar

Basically if something isn't an Ideas or Event post, we don't need to show the date the page was published.

Question: is there something we should put there instead? Maybe the "excerpt" summary for the page?

Title Format

Could you make a form for displaying events that put the name of the event in bold it could display like:

Image
Eyebeam Exchange
Date
Subtitle: LEARNING AI, CREATING EMOTIONAL DATA SETS AND DEEP LEARNING IN THE BROWSER WITH ML5 WORKSHOP WITH HANNAH DAVIS

Event page loading

Event page loading has gone odd. I understand if the lazy-load can't be ready. But the image grid returning to normal would be great.

Resident Links

Hey- this isn't high priority- but is there any way that you could link the name of the resident and image to their introduction or bio without having the link below? I want to thank you for the work you did adding the links, but we decided it would be better if you could link the name and image.

Change Resident Profiles to Contain Tags for Years of Residency

Currently the residents are organized by year of residency that is designated in the profile. This means that if one resident has had two residencies with separate years of duration, then two profiles have to be created so that they show up in the different years. Does this make sense?

The simple solution would be to allow a profile to have multiple tags for the years they've been in residence and change the website so it is organized by these year tags.

Accessible Colors

Hi, could you change the greenish accent color to something more accessible. WCAG 2.0 level AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Level AAA requires a contrast ratio of at least 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. Here's a contrast checker: https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/

Press

Where can we put a section for latest press?

Uploading Photos

Just tried to upload a new photo and got this message. Not sure what it means

Sidebar

If the sidebar doesn't end up being used to lead people to similar posts, is there any way to get rid of it all together and put the date underneath the image? @leigler any thoughts?

Lazy load

Is this still a possibility for the events page?

Youtube embed size

Youtube videos embed in posts and pages at a considerably smaller width than the text. How do we get it to be in the same width as the text?

screen shot 2018-07-12 at 11 45 26 am

Footer Address

Currently trying to highlight the address (199 Cook St) also highlights odd parts of the footer (icons, etc).
While usually this isn't a problem, I imagine some people will want to highlight the address to look up on maps.google , etc (esp on mobile)

Link + Footer Colors

  • Random color choice should ideally operate on each individual element (so that a page can be colorful rather than have a color wash) (enhancement)

Missing links for Residents

In old website we could have the residents link somewhere - like to their personal website or more information about them on our website. Wordpress panel like this on old site:

New Wordpress panel:

And when I click 'Preview Changes' button on the new site it goes here:
