I somehow missed your invitation to work on this.
I have just written a julia wrapper around SHTns. Compared to your package it has a clean, hand-written interface, but it lacks the easy installation of a package.
Are you still interested in this? Maybe we should merge the two approaches?

Ideally a package should compile the C library on the user machine, because it gains a lot to be tuned for each machine. I don't know if this is possible.
