When "/home/gaige/" is set as root, will not render. 500 error

On my laptop with debian jessie, when I set the share-root as "/home/gaige/" a request to /share/ will not render anything and will instead result in a 500. This does not happen when any other path is set as the root, even when it is set to "~/".

I've a lisp-only linux distro. Am rolling it out to people who will comprehend what & why. Have read your posts on reddit and it seems that you walked down a bunch of the same paths I have.
