The goal here is to let developers import the library like this:

import categorize from "categorize";

We can achieve this with a simple module.exports = categorizeFunction; inside main.js but we won't be able to export ValidationError Class, so that developers can import both like this:

import categorize, { ValidationError } from "categorize";

So, in my opinion, the usage of ES Modules is necessary here.
I have three solutions in mind, which are:

• Use Babel;
• Use Rollup;
• Use TypeScript.

I will be creating a branch for each solution in order to compare between them and choose the right one for the next major release.
