Just heads up that I maintain jump-char here: https://github.com/lewang/jump-char

It seems to have functionality close to fastnav; I didn't know about this project oging in. My starting point was to make a better i-y-goto-char.

Anyway, it hooks into isearch machinery so you get all benefits of isearch. I'll not list them here. It also integrates with jumpchar to jump to characters further away.

Whenever I hit something like M-s (search to char) in an org-mode buffer, all my sections are expanded.

Make it work the same as isearch works - when currently found occurance is invisible due to overlays, it uses isearch-open-invisiible-temporary overlay property to do so. outline-mode (and hence org-mode) support this property. It should be enough to make fastnav simulate isearch's behaviour to make it work
