Lets give the ant some interesting terrain tiles to explore. Just basic tiles for now, so the ant feels at home.
Right now, the game world is somewhat bland. Lets give the ant some nice scenery to explore by creating some modular game sprites, such as:
The pheromone trail currently 'evaporates' each node after a certain amount of time. It might be a nice touch if the nodes would 'fizzle' or 'float' up right before they disappear.

Consider how to create an action system and UI to allow players to choose actions for the ant in relation to the game environment.
When the ant moves around, the pheremone trail sometimes moves to the left or right of the ant sprite. Try to get the pheremone trail to always start at the tail of the ant.

Lets add a little bit of an ambience to the game world, perhaps with a location-based game sound or even some music!
The ant should get hungry over time. It will need to find some food around the map. Add the following:

Ants need to drink. Water. So, lets add a thirst component to the game.
Perhaps the world should start as a great unknown. As the ant explores, the world environment can open up to its senses. As a start, consider how to add a vision component to the game, where the world is unveiled as the ant walks around.
There is probably some lifespan of a pheremone trail, i.e. it would evaporate over some time. Determine how long a pheremone trail segment should stick around, and how to make it evaporate.
OK, so the ant kind of just floats around right now. For all we know, it could be a petrified zombie ghost ant, mindlessly consuming green gobs of goo (food). Lets put some swing into the ant's steps with a basic movement animation!
It seems that the ant may like to explore more than a single screen. So, it would be reasonable that a camera should follow the ant, otherwise the player may quickly get bored. Add a camera system to follow the ant around as it explores a larger world.
No day would be complete without the ant bumping into something. This could be a small stone, a mushroom, etc.. Add a couple of environment objects for the ant to bump into.
