README

litedown-clean

A minimalist and elegant presentation theme for Yihui Xie's litedown, ported from my Quarto reveal.js clean theme.

Click the screenshot below to be taken to a live demo.

Features

  • Same visual identity as the original: Roboto typography, accent colours, minimalist table styling
  • CSS Scroll Snap slide navigation (no reveal.js dependency)
  • KaTeX math rendering
  • Column layout classes (columns5050, columns3070, columns7030, etc.)
  • Built-in slide classes: inverse, center, middle, fade
  • Utility classes: .alert, .fg, .bg, .button
  • Compatible with modelsummary, tinytable, and fixest
  • No Quarto, Pandoc, or knitr dependencies

Usage

Create an .Rmd file with the following YAML header:

---
title: My Presentation
subtitle: A subtitle
author: "Your Name"
date: "`{r} format(Sys.Date(), '%B %d, %Y')`"
output:
  html:
    meta:
      css: ["@default", "@snap", "@callout", "litedown-clean.css"]
      js: ["@snap", "@callout"]
    options:
      echo: false
---

Then render with:

litedown::fuse("my-slides.Rmd", output = "my-slides.html")

Slide structure

Slides are created with ## headings. Subtitles use ###:

## Slide title

### Subtitle in accent colour

Syntax differences from Quarto

Feature Quarto litedown
Spans [text]{.alert} <span class="alert">text</span>
Chunk options #| echo: false #| echo: false (same) or brace syntax
Global options YAML execute: litedown::reactor(echo = FALSE)
Slide classes ## Title {.inverse} <!--# class="inverse" --> before heading
Columns :::: {.columns} fenced divs <div class="columns5050"> HTML divs

Column layouts

<div class="columns5050">
<div>

Left column content (50%)

</div>
<div>

Right column content (50%)

</div>
</div>

Available classes: columns5050, columns3070, columns7030, columns4060, columns6040.

Known limitations

  • No presenter view, slide overview, or transitions (reveal.js features)
  • No output-location: column (Quarto-specific)
  • No complex author metadata (ORCID, affiliations, multiple authors)
  • etable(markdown = TRUE) PNG pipeline doesn't work (litedown doesn't set knitr::is_html_output())
  • KaTeX instead of MathJax (limited custom math font support)
