I'd like to be able to invoke the script in a way where I could use an alternative package manager to accomplish the downloading and installing of the packages, such as yarn or pnpm.

Unfortunately, in the instance of pnpm -g root, a) gives an error and a weird multi-line output if you're not root, and b) doesn't say the same thing npm does, instead spitting out /usr/pnpm-global/4/node_modules

Just to be clear, the package is generated just fine, it just has a malformed name.

npm2tgz yarn
-> generates /tmp/yarn-1.12.3-npmjs-1SBo.txz
npm2tgz [email protected]
-> generates /tmp/yarn1.12.3--npmjs-1SBo.txz
