github-trending's Introduction

GitHub-Trending

Scrapes GitHub's trending and showcase pages to produce an API that can be consumed by downstream applications. This application was originally designed for use in the iOS GitHub application CodeHub but I welcome anyone else who wishes to expand upon this to do so.

Installation

You will need two prerequisites before you are able to sucessfully execute this application:

  1. You will need a MongoDB instance. Try MongoLab for a free instance
  2. You will need to generate a GitHub token if you want to scrape the pages

To run either of the applications you will need to either set the DB_URL environmental variable or insert it on the end of each command (like below). You may also set the GITHUB_TOKEN environmental variable if you don't want to pass that on the command line too. It's up to you.

git clone [email protected]:thedillonb/GitHub-Trending.git

cd GitHub-Trending

npm install

Run the web app: DB_URL=<MONGO_URI> npm start

Run the updater: DB_URL=<MONGO_URI> ./bin/update --trending --showcase --key <GITHUB_TOKEN>
