Otherwise you end up with the problem of https://gist.github.com/mbostock/3306234 which comes up as having all D3 functions in use because it has d3.v2.min.js as one of the files in the gist.

It would be good to rescan the gists every once in a while, to account for added or removed d3 functions, and possibly removed gists. For example, this search: http://bl.ocksplorer.org/#/search/d3.geo.graticule does not bring up this gist: http://bl.ocks.org/monfera/10527804 which, when it got indexed, didn't have a graticule.

Looks like there's an orphan in this file that breaks installation. I deleted "git" and it installed fine after that.

So that we can deploy this thing...

If the thumbnail file is missing, then the link points to github rather than bl.ocks.org, even if it would otherwise render just fine on bl.ocks.org. It is probably an intentional filter to tell apart those gists which are meant for bl.ocks.org viewing. But in the future, github, bl.ocks.org or bl.ocksplorer might gain the functionality to auto-generate thumbnails based on gist scraping.
