Legal move generation is essential to any chess engine. Should be able to generate by piece/colored piece (colored piece for unique moves like pawns) for granularity. Should utilize attack bitboards (also separate per piece). Sliding pieces should utilize magic bitboards for the best speed, initial generation can use bitboard operations. Legal checking can be done by using the same attack target masks used for move generation.
