NHS Numbers can be left out under certain circumstances:

It is mandatory to record the NHS NUMBER. There are exceptions, such as Accident and Emergency care, sexual health and major incidents, as defined in existing national policies.

Unfortunately the NHS Number Input and Display Guidelines only say a valid NHS Number is displayed in a format like 999 999 9999.

Currently the nhscui.toNHSNumber function returns "Invalid" if an NHS number is invalid, but also places empty strings and null values (and zeroes, should this be the case?) under the same umbrella.

Something should be done to differentiate actually invalid NHS numbers from NHS numbers which have intentionally not been provided.

The Patient Name Input and Display specification contradicts itself when it comes to displaying Titles.

In section 2.1.3 (Examples of Incorrect Usage) it states that displaying a name with the title omitted is invalid:

CHARLIE, Oliver
This example shows only a Given and Family Name. It does not give enough information for a Title to be assumed.

In section 2.2.10 (Mandatory and Optional fields) it states:

The following fields are optional:

• Title
• Middles name(s)
• Suffix
• Preferred name

It doesn't go on to describe how to display a name where a Title hasn't been provided. An email was sent out on Wednesday 30th September 2015 to [email protected] for clarification. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.
