desolate-country-web's Issues

Make sure institution X always clears

Currently when an institution is displayed on the right hand side, there’s an “X” that is displayed next to the institution name. We need to either get rid of this X, or else make it functional. Currently when you linger over it, the cursor turns into a pointer-hand, but doesn’t actually allow you to click on the “X” to clear it. Except occasionally it does (see next point).

No numbers when individual is selected

When an individual is selected, can we change display so red bubbles appear with no numbers? In other words, can we remove the “1”s that display across that individual's bubbles? Since they’re all 1, there’s no need for them, and they’re just confusing.

Fix CA - Los Gatos - Sacred Heart Jesuit Center

The bubble displays seven, but only one priest is listed on the right-hand display. And the number 8 appears on the left-hand display. There are approximately 22 guys on the data sheet who passed through here.

Add a map key

  • Red Dots
  • Black Dots
  • Reservations
  • Instructions

Put the instructions and key in a more permanent place. Info bug?

Select one filter at a time

A user shouldn’t be able to have a name and institution simultaneously selected on the left-hand menus. If an institution is selected, and then the user decides to search by individual, can we change it so that the individual’s information overrides the institutional display (and vice versa?). Or else develop a more intuitive way to deselect? Currently a user needs to click on “Select All” to deselect. Also, currently an “X” appears on the right-hand display, next to institution name, but clicking on it doesn’t actually allow you to deselect the institution.

Show link

We made one additional add to the spreadsheet/data set. Now each tab includes a link in Row 1. We’d like to use this link to hyperlink the names of individual priests, when they display on the right-hand side. So in other words, when a user searches for “Rene Astruc”, and his name then appears on the right above his assignment list, we’d like the name to be hyperlinked to the link in Row 1 of his tab on the spreadsheet. (Each of these links takes a user to a corresponding page on this website BishopAccountability, that collects news articles and other information about priests).

Change playback text

The playback button appears (and works) for institutional display as well as the individual display. Whenever it appears below a selected institution (rather than an individual_, can we change how it’s labeled? From “Watch this Jesuit Move” to “Watch Jesuits at this Institution”? Also, can we then bold both “Watch this Jesuit Move” and “Watch Jesuits at this Institution”?

Sorting for Institution detail display

re: Right Hand Drop Down (Institution): Right now the names aren’t sorted in a particular order. Can we either sort them alphabetically or by dates or else sort so that men with abuse claim at that institution appear first?

Check number of individuals

There are 112 individuals on the list, but the display on the left says “96” when all individuals are selected.

Fix MT - Havre (St. Jude’s Church)

The bubble displays two, but only one priest is listed on right-hand display. Based on the data sheet, there are at least seven additional priests who passed through here, and are missing from the right-hand display.

Change academic years text

re: Right-Hand Display (Individual): change text from “Academic years” to “Years at Institution”

Refactor the table view to show one priest per row

For the table view: for each location, we can have each priest listed once, the dates they were there, if there was a credible abuse claim. The specific dates where the abuse allegation happened at that location is less important because the data is a little fuzzy. If there was a gap, we could list twice or have two date ranges under the one name.

When switching institutions, clear all other institution settings

When you switch between institutions on the left, the display on the right now usually changes accordingly, but sometimes it doesn’t. Occasionally the display on the right will keep the old institution, until you click the X button (which in that case, the X works?). Occasionally the display on the right will just not display the institution (see attached screen shot, as an example).

Slow down playback

We’d like to slow down the playback feature. Maybe 50% slower? Or 30%? Whatever it takes to give the viewer more time to process what's happening.

Accused mismatch

When user selects an institution, the number that displays in the bubble (i.e.Holy Cross in Alaska: 7), doesn’t match the number that displays under “Accused Individuals” on the left hand side (19). This is also the case for other institutions. See for e.g. Loyola Marymount University: bubble shows 3 / “accused individuals” shows 11.

Change claims language

From Katie: we'll need to change the language of "abuse claims". We don't actually know how many individual allegations there were for most of these guys; all we know are how many years the claims that did occur span.

Add flathead reservation

The Flathead Reservation in Montana is currently not marked as a reservation; it just needs to be outlined / shaded appropriately.
