Favorite Software

This is a slightly-opinionated personal favorite list of software. In the future this may include other resources, but will always be tailored to developers and power users.

Prerequisites

I've included the short snippets to install most of these using Homebrew. The installation instructions for Homebrew and Homebrew Cask are also included. If you would prefer not to use either, you can click on the titles for their respective project pages.

Adium is a free and open source instant messaging application for Mac OS X, written using Mac OS X's Cocoa API, released under the GNU GPL and developed by the Adium team. Based on the libpurple protocol library, Adium can connect you to any number of messaging accounts on any combination of supported messaging services (see further down for the list) and then chat with other people using those services.

BetterTouchTool is an awesome tool for customizing your touchpad/trackpad/Magic Mouse/Magic Trackpad devices, allowing complex gestures, custom keyboard shortcuts, window snapping and much, much more.

Caffeine is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back. Right-click (or ⌘-click) the icon to show the menu.

Alternatives: Should I Sleep

Process Less, Sass, Stylus, Jade, Haml, Slim, CoffeeScript, Javascript and Compass files automatically each time you save. Easily set options for each language.

Note: I would highly recommend using existing command-line tools (eg. grunt) over companion apps like CodeKit. However, if that's not your idea of fun, then enjoy CodeKit.

Edit and run code in any programming language with just a single click.

While working on your Mac you create and download a lot of files, but rarely delete anything. As time goes by you have less and less room for your data. Install a larger disk if you have a few hundred dollars to spare or pay monthly fee for cloud storage. Or get DaisyDisk at a fraction of the price and get room for your data by removing old junk you unlikely even thought you had.

Dash is an API Documentation Browser and Code Snippet Manager. Dash stores snippets of code and instantly searches offline documentation sets for 130+ APIs (for a full list, see below). You can even generate your own docsets or request docsets to be included.

Vim is an almost compatible version of the UNIX editor Vi. Many new features have been added: multi-level undo, syntax highlighting, command line history, on-line help, spell checking, filename completion, block operations, etc. There is also a Graphical User Interface (GUI) available. MacVim is the text editor Vim for Mac OS X.

The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR, 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers.
