Nice use of jc and jq!

Just a quick note that you don't need to pipe the output of jc to jq when assigning the JSON output to a variable:

result=$(ping -c $attempts -M do -s $bytes -W $timeout "${host}" | jc --ping -p | jq)

can be simplified to:

result=$(ping -c $attempts -M do -s $bytes -W $timeout "${host}" | jc --ping)

I also removed the -p in the jc command since it only makes the JSON pretty and is not needed for parsing.

You could even simplify this further with the jc magic syntax, but I tend to prefer pipes for some reason:

result=$(jc ping -c $attempts -M do -s $bytes -W $timeout "${host}")
