Just a thank you for getting all of these odd sizes and forgotten fonts into one place! I'm currently playing with a 128x64 LED panel and was looking for old mac fonts, but the like of Espy (sniff, my old newton!) are just awesome for that sort of things :-o
Hi John!
I came across this repo, seems like a nice resource compiling a good deal of history of Apple Fonts. I am looking for the old New York Apple typeface https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_(1983_typeface), which is not the same as the 2019 one (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_(2019_typeface).
The latter is available for Developers from Apple: https://developer.apple.com/fonts/, I am looking for the TrueType 1983 version of New York developed by Susan Kare.
I've been able to look into the *.dfont files you have here:
NewYork_15.dfont NewYork_17.dfont NewYork_21.dfont NewYork_22.dfont NewYork_26.dfont
But upon converting them to .ttf using fondu in Ubuntu/Linux, and inspecting them with FontForge they seem to be the old bitmap versions pre-dating MacOS 7.
# this is on windows wsl - ubuntu
sudo apt install fondu
fondu NewYork_15.dfont
# produces NewYork_15.ttf
This is how they loook in FontForge:
I have browsed your repo and couldn't find other instances of New York fonts for Mac OS 7 through 9, do you carry these in this repo? Otherwise do you have any pointers on where to look?
thanks in advance -- fernan
Since old Mac Systems used the Resource Fork to store font data (instead of the data fork), all the original font files in the repo are Zero size and are missing the font data.
Some possible solutions might be:
SplitForks
on OS X and check those files inThis would need to be done from the original files on your computer the repo originated from - git unfortunately is ignorant of resource forks without using something like some specific git hooks to split/recombine them.
I found these fonts on the ARPL (Apple Reference and Presentations Library) CD v 3.0 from around 1990:
Miscellaneous Fonts.sit.zip (.sit in .zip, as Github doesn't accept .sit archives and I wanted to make sure )
The CD (and many other ARPL CD's) can be downloaded here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/apple-reference-and-presentations-library-internal-edition-v10
Here is an example of transformed glyphs of Time_18.sfd to Bitmap.sfd.
Bitmap.zip
Thanks for this great collection! Really looking fw to playing with these.
I've tried converting these to .otf or .ttf with a bunch of Online Font Coverters I found (such as https://onlinefontconverter.com/, https://anyconv.com/fr/convertisseur-de-dfont-en-ttf/ ...) but this translation doe not seem to work. Anything I'm doing wrong?
