ABOUT

The official Written? Kitten! is now at http://writtenkitten.co/ and the official repository is at https://github.com/joshuawalcher/writtenkitten/.

This is the source code for the deprecated website writtenkitten.net, provided for the interest of anyone who'd like to know how it worked, or to adapt it for their own use. writtenkitten.net is now deprecated.

The website and the code are provided "as is" and we don't have any particular plans to support or improve them, though if you were to send us something awesome me might consider it.

writtenkitten-original's Issues

This repo is no longer maintained (new link inside)

For those it may concern, this repo hasn't been visited in a long time and the owner (@Skud) hasn't been responsive here or via Twitter, and the WrittenKitten domain name has since lapsed. I hope they're okay.

@joshuawalcher has taken it over at his repo and the site is now hosted at http://writtenkitten.co/

I wanted to leave this e-mail so that folks would have a pointed on where to head for active development if they came across this at some point.

Kittens not refreshing

Hi, I love the idea for the site and started using it yesterday, but I found that while a kitten appeared after the first 100 words (when goal was set at 100 words), a fresh kitten did not appear when I passed 200 words.
(When I would reset the goal to 200 words after passing 100 but before reaching 200, a new kitten did appear at 200 words, but not at 400, etc.)
I'm using Google Chrome.

Anyone want to take over WK?

Sadly, I no longer have the motivation to maintain Written? Kitten!, so Iā€™m looking for someone to take it over.

This would involve:

  • I transfer the domain to you, and you continue to keep it up and running or at least smoothly transition to something else (eg. with a redirect for a year or two)
  • Web-hosting wise, you simply need to host a single static HTML file; it gets about 25k-50k hits a month, sometimes spiking in November during NaNoWriMo (the most was its first NaNo, at 235k visits in Nov 2011.)
  • You take over ownership of this github repo and deal with very occasional bugfixes, improvements, etc.

Iā€™d ask that you continue to attribute me and Emily as the creators, and to make it available under the BSD license it currently has.

Anyone want it?

First kitten doesn't appear until 200 words

A report from a user, by email:

Hi! I really like "Written Kitten"! But it's hasn't been working for me for the last week or two; I haven't been seeing new kittens after writing 100 words, smile. If you could help, that would be great!

My followup:

Thanks, I'll look into it. I haven't had any other reports but will try to replicate it.

Can you tell me if it happens when you reload the page completely fresh in your browser, with shift-reload?

Their response:

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I'm still not receiving kittens after 100 words--although I do after 200 words. I've tried shift-reloading, but that doesn't help, and I tried it in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome on two different computers, and my son tried it on his laptop, too. (As you can tell, I like Written Kitten :)

I have replicated the bug, so it is actually a thing.
