When retrieving fields from files, add a method that automatically detects type of the field and translates it accordingly.

this does not behave nicely when talking to a server which goes to sleep

i.e.

connect to MC
test_local is called (with timeout)
make call to MC ok
MC server goes to sleep
make call to MC
call hangs indefinitely

to workaround this, currently I shim the session call like so (ms being a MediaServer instance)

    ms.session.request = functools.partial(self.__ms.session.request, timeout=2)

I couldn't see an option to get this parameter through any other way, is there one? if not, I suggest added the timeout on every call

It appears that the manifest is missing at least one file necessary to build

Are there any plans to implement getting the current Playlist?

I have a use case where I need the current playing track info plus the next few tracks.

If not, I will have a go at implementing it.
I'm pretty new to Python, but looking through the code it makes some sort of sense to me.

Currently, pymcws only resolves hosts on the local network. The groundwork for negotiating the best connection is already done, but the functionality needs to be implemented.

If a server has more than one local ip address, the connection process will probably fail. This needs testing on a device that exhibits the issue.
