Test suite

With my efforts to port all this over to Python 3, it's a good opportunity to fix the lack of a test suite. The code here was culled from a variety of different projects, but as I did do, I didn't port/write the tests to go with them. Given most of the code doesn't need network access, and those parts that do can be faked, it should be possible to get decent coverage.

Also, much of the code still assumes that strings and bytestrings are the same thing, as I just did a run through 2to3 and did some additional fix-ups without running the resulting code, so I likely need to fix things like the netstring module.
