CDI Quick lab seems to be missing one thing... about kubevirt

CDI uses StorageProfile CR to define the preferred settings (e.g. access mode) for various storage providers. Apparently there is no default profile for your storage driver, hence you need to set accessMode in the DataVolume spec. I agree that the lab text can be improved by mentioning this explicitly.

That would explain it then. I was running the quickstart using minikube (in a docker container) on a Debian 12 system

Yeah it sounds like you are using https://github.com/kubernetes/minikube/blob/master/pkg/storage/storage_provisioner.go#L37
which we don't have defaults for at https://github.com/kubevirt/containerized-data-importer/blob/main/pkg/storagecapabilities/storagecapabilities.go#L33.

We had a similar issue about the rancher local path provisioner kubevirt/containerized-data-importer#3005, if you can add a comment in there with your storage class specification, that would be great
