Alternatives:

1. Keep a counter when going up and down, and only increment/decrement when successful.
   1. Use a counter, but try to digDown() to force animals to move. Is the programmer at fault if the robot is cruel? GLaDOS says yes.
2. If the sapling slot isn't empty and it still can't place(), keep trying to go down.

At each step up() it should compare() with the slot where the block from the previous dig() was stored.

It seems the issue is contested, but that drops generally despawn within five minutes. It would be nice to be able to continue longer by collecting saplings, and apples would be a side effect.

Wheat and nether wart should be simple, if given a sample.

Melons, pumpkins and mushrooms should be simple, if placed so that they can only grow to one other block.

Flax should be simple, just plant, go up, and wait for it to grow.

Oak and jungle trees can grow branches. It would be nice if these could be harvested. For efficiency it might be good to check only once every N plantings, and to only look at the blocks immediately to the side of the stem. Also, the check should be cancelled if it's another type of tree.
