miniterm opens on wrong X server

I am seeing an issue with the miniterm window opening on the wrong X server.
I have my first tty running dwm on :0 and second tty running herbstluftwm on :1 but I don't think the wm matters.
When I am on the first tty and run miniterm, the window appears on the second tty.
Even if I do DISPLAY=:0 miniterm it still opens it on :1.
The first tty does report DISPLAY as :0 on the first one and :1 on the second.
