geolabels's Issues

Run Makefile with merge to master

I'm not sure if this is possible, but I'd like to see the following progression:

  • someone makes edits to working_dataset/geolabels.geojson
  • they open a pull request
  • pull request is reviewed and approved by a codeowner
  • Makefile is automatically run which creates new master geolabels.geojson

Clean up short line features

The polygon centerlines from Natural Earth data occasionally resulted in really short line segments that will never display a label because it can't fit on the line.

These segments need to be edited and lengthened.

The efficient manual workflow I've found is through QGIS: start editing, select a short feature, in the editing toolbar select add part, draw in the new longer line segment, then in the editing toolbar select delete part and remove the original short segment. Update the date_edited field and save

Create script to auto populate empty fields

If fields such as scalerank, minzoom, maxzoom, and date_added are left blank we should auto populate them based on certain criteria. scalerank can be assigned by coming up with a calculation taking the line's length into account. Longer lines should get lower scalerank number. If the name is all caps that could be another weight in the calculation. Min and Max zoom could be determined based on feature length as well. Date added should automatically populate to the date the branch was merged if it was left blank.
