alt AppBuilder

Overview

The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex Application Builder enables quick and easy creation of new web mapping applications, as well as view and modify existing web applications. It is designed to make the process seamless without requiring programming or configuration file editing. The application builder is targeted to users who intend to create custom web mapping applications through a WYSIWYG look and feel. It is an Adobe AIR application that includes a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) interface. The application builder has a simple three-stage process where you define the data content, functionality, and appearance of a web mapping application. It is designed to help novice users learn about the different ArcGIS Viewer configuration properties, as well as create and deploy new web mapping applications effortlessly.

Details

The pre-compiled Application Builder should suffice for the vast majority of users. A smaller percentage of developers might be interested in taking the additional steps to deploy a custom Application Builder.

Reasons a developer might want to pursue this option:

  • To deliver a custom user interface (CustomModule) for configuring a custom widget instead of the default xml configuration file.
  • To embed your own custom widgets inside of Application Builder, before deploying the Application Builder for your own organization.
  • To deploy a custom version of Application Builder within your own organization.
  • To support a custom locale in Application Builder.
  • To brand the Viewer and Application Builder for your own organization.
  • To compile the latest version of Application Builder from GitHub.

If you answered yes to one or more of the options above, then proceed to the instructions on the wiki for compiling the Application Builder source code.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Flex development.
  • A little background with Adobe/Apache Flex SDK.
  • Experience with the ArcGIS API for Flex would help.
