  • Text Backgrounds "Fire" made of fire!

If anybody figures out how to do text paths, please let me know!

Installation

If you like you can import the project into eclipse, and use it as a library project This is a decent tutorial on using library projects

Realistically, just copy MagicTextView.java & attrs.xml into your project and use them as your own.

Usage

From Xml:

<com.qwerjk.better_text.MagicTextView
    xmlns:qwerjk="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/com.qwerjk.better_text"
    android:textSize="78dp"
    android:textColor="#ff333333"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:drawableLeft="@android:drawable/btn_star"
    android:textStyle="bold"
    android:padding="10dp"
    qwerjk:foreground="@drawable/fake_luxury_tiled"
    qwerjk:innerShadowDy="2"
    qwerjk:innerShadowColor="#FF000000"
    qwerjk:innerShadowRadius="1"
    qwerjk:outerShadowDy="3"
    qwerjk:outerShadowColor="#FF0088ff"
    qwerjk:outerShadowRadius="10"
    qwerjk:strokeColor="#FFff0000"
    qwerjk:strokeJoinStyle="miter"
    qwerjk:strokeWidth="5"
    android:text="Magic" />

From Java:

view = new MagicTextView(context);
view.addInnerShadow(0, -1, 0, 0xFFffffff);
view.addOuterShadow(0, -1, 0, 0xff000000);
view.setStroke(4, 0xFFff0000);
view.setForegroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.fake_luxury_tiled);

magictextview's Issues

License

Could you please provide the appropriate license to this project?

Inner shadow doesn't work on SDK 14+

Inner shadow doesn't work when client project SDK is 14 or above (project using your library project).
Changing the SDK level of the MagicTextView project to 14+ also 'deactivate' the innershadow feature.

SDK version up to 13 are ok

I suspect some other feature to be also impacted by this, but I didn't really had the time to check.

Anyway, this is really a great stuff you did :-)

Note: FYI, shadows are visible in eclipse, whatever the SDK level is.

onDraw loop

With the current design, onDraw() is doing stuff that eventually will have the entire view invalidated, thus calling onDraw again and we're stuck in an infinite loop. This widget shouldn't really be used until this is fixed.

Solution for inner shadow problem in new APIs

The problem is that inner shadow are drawn by using PorterDuffXfermode, and many of this operations are not supported be hardware accelerated (new APIs have this as default). So, you should disable hardware acceleration for these type of views.

in init() method you should put:

if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.HONEYCOMB) {
    setLayerType(View.LAYER_TYPE_SOFTWARE, null);
}

this solved all my problems in all levels of API

strokeWidth should be dimensions

I'm having an issue with strokeWidth being defined as a float - depending on the screen resolution, the text will look different

I guess the easiest solution is to just change it to dimension. On attr.xml:

And then on method MagiceTextView.formatMagicTextView:
float strokeWidth = a.getDimension(R.styleable.MagicTextView_strokeWidth, 1);

Rendering Slow in Scroll View

I used Magic Text view in the scroll view , but the scroll is getting slow on my device , like a stuck.
Why is this happening

BlurMaskFilter.Blur.Normal Null

Hey

this line return Nullpointerexception on android 4.4

paint.setMaskFilter(new BlurMaskFilter(shadow.r, BlurMaskFilter.Blur.NORMAL));

MagicTextView as an EditText?

I'm trying to use MagicTextView as a EditText. Since EditText derives from TextView, I thought it should be straight forward and I should simply change MagicTextView base class from TextView to EditText.
Sadly, text only displays its border, without fill effect:
magieditext

Anyone has idea what might be causing that?

setting TextAppeareance in code

If we define a style in xml and want to apply it at RunTime using setTextAppearance, the MagicTextView specific format is not loaded. Adding this to code solved it:

public void setTextAppearance(Context context, int resid) {
super.setTextAppearance(context, resid);
TypedArray a = context.obtainStyledAttributes(resid, R.styleable.MagicTextView);
formatMagicTextView(a);
a.recycle();
}

Large text size fail to draw border

Thanks for this custom text view. I have noticed that it was fail to render border or wrong border rendered when I try to set large font size(issue is Only in kitkat, works fine for 5.0 and up also works for Jelly Bean Os). I don't know it kind of android bug or not but I find out one link related to this.
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62800
Let me know is it any kind of android bug or code bug?

Gradient Feature

It will be cool to have a xml attributes to set a gradient with 2 levels of colors as :

qwerjk:gradientStartColor
qwerjk:gradientEndColor
