Thanks so much for opening up this issue! I will take a look hopefully soon, I imagine we can use the same characters (white pieces) and color then differently depending on the piece.

The other issue of the font not being monospaced for some characters seems like a terminal / font configuration issue
Does the reproduce on different configurations of font and terminals?
