bronzeageindex's Issues

Submission message

Need a clearer indication of success or failure once you click submit. A message such as "You have successfully submitted your transcription. Here is another to try if you wish!"

Tutorial changes

Consider adding a quick example of how to transcribe the top right corner. Something along the lines of "Transcribe example as II 12 A" might help users who are not sure how to write Roman numerals. Add comment about how to handle words or portions of words that cannot be read. Clarify that the measurements should be converted to mm and grammes, with the originals put in Transcriber's comments (suggestions from Rob).

Fix image div

Currently not viewing properly - affix class probably the cause.

Link on task page to tutorial

Needs a link on any given task page so the user can access the tutorial (not just access it the first time they try the application).

Help button

The help button that should return the user to the tutorial from the transcription page does not seem to work on my browser (Chrome on MacOSX)

data export

I have noticed the exported .csv file comes out a bit messily at present (with misplaced fields in different records). I think it might be because we have been switching the field around a little without clearing the db, but we need to check? Also, need to set the number of users per photo to three if it is no already.

skip a card

Not crucial but perhaps have an option to skip a card?

Tutorial content

The tutorial needs to lose some of the preamble (which is in the application description anyway) to make it short...look into a possible extra section break. Add a link to the community forum.

Icon pixellated

Import a higher res BM Bronze Age index image (as the the one under "Most Active Applications” looks pixellated).

This uses a scaled thumbnail at present from the PAS website. Needs a suggested images from Neil Wilkin.

Convert to Bootstrap 3

As we're converting the layout to bootstrap 3, we need to change some of the class names. I'll do this once I have got the theme sorted out.

Image zooming

Would it be worth using software such as sea dragon @teleyinex @ahb108 ? The use of controls overlaid on image might make it more intuitive as well.

Map - bounds

Several things for the map. Objects will only be from the UK, so perhaps set bounds of map to the UK view port only and zoom in slightly?

Add field for grid reference

Sometimes a textual snippet available refers to the OSGB grid reference where the object came from eg TQ1234. Add field for this to be entered.

IE8 console not defined

Daniel,
I know it's a rubbish browser, but we do gets lots of UK based council employees who use IE8 and below. They can't cope with the console and so we get the error below.

Low priority for now.

Help Button

If a user starts transcribing a card, and then clicks Help for the tutorial, they cannot go back to the same card - is this fixable?

Browser compatibility

Need to check this for Safari, and then make an explicit statement (on the tutorial or on a task page or both) about which browsers work. The main issue here is with whether a user can submit correctly. Neil had problems with IE7 (on Windows 7 and XP). Chiara had problems with Safari, but it may have been due to old stuff in cache as it works now. See also Peter's comments at:

Other Notes

"Other Notes" would be more clearly described as "Transcriber's Comments”

Date of discovery

Hi all,
I wonder if we need to break the date of discovery down into YYYY - MM - DD fields as sometimes these will be present on the cards as finders started to give more data to the curator.
What do you think? Should be simple to add, no? @ahb108 @ChiaraBonacchi what do you think?
Dan

Broken image link

There is a broken image link on the "Some issues to watch out for" page of the tutorial.

Findspot complexity and look-up

I think we need to separate out "Findspot" into:

"Findspot (Full Description)" where a whole bunch of text can be added.
and
"Placename Lookup Tool" or some such which is where someone can search for the place on the map.

Drag and drop can remain as an alternative or a way of adjusting placename look-up as it currently is. A goo example of the challenge is attached, where Marshall Avenue Bognor finds the street exactly which is good, but we also want to trasncribe the full text from the Site portion of the card.

Basic feedback from an FLO

Just having a play at the data entry for the micropasts site.

It seems that the card get sometimes gets stuck when scrolling down the page and it would be useful to have a way of making it larger - the notes on top right hand corner in pencil are tricky to see - and on some cards the flowing pencil script is faded. Just had to plug a mouse in to make card larger and smaller - could do with a zoom button embedded on the screen - like a PAS viewer - also keep getting this error message http://crowdsourced.micropasts.org/app/bronzeageindex/task/79

Also looking at it - it could do with a copy last function as it seems that cards are loaded in order and on the 3 I have done - 2 have similar information regarding collection and findspot - maybe a selective copy tool which means that certain fields - like measurements are remarks could be copied.

It would also be good to see a couple of examples of perfect transcribing - maybe visually seeing the linked description to the card. This might make it more simple to transcribe.

Is there a standardised way for noting a word that is not readable - I have used [...] but there may be something more useful that will draw those records together so that someone can check the original ?

It would also be good to see the other records that have been done somewhere on the site - it says that 5% has already been done - which should be a useful number.
