Glyphs vs UFO?

The sources are provided in both Glyphs and UFO; however, which is the format actually used for development?

Now that https://github.com/googlei18n/glyphsLib provides a bridge from Glyphs source files (.glyphs) to UFOs via defcon, providing duplicate sources seems unnecessary :)

Contour issues

Many glyphs (D,B,R,q,e,z, 2, others) have line segments that are just off vertical or horizontal by a few units.

Also, lowercase t's crossbar has unnecessary control points, weirdly arranged.

Is Selawik no longer updated since 2015? Or you guys might abandon this?

Hi Microsoft! Are you probably forgot about Selawik, the "open source" replacement for Segoe UI typeface? This repository never been updated since 2015 (the initial year release of this font), and there's a lot of changes year-to-year.

There's something need to change for this whole typeface:

1. Italic styles
2. More weights like Segoe UI, I guess...?
3. Add several style sets (or something)
4. Font variable support, just like Segoe UI Variable on Windows 11
5. Redesigned Selawik, like Windows 11 version of Segoe UI

We'll wait if you probably might working on redesigned Selawik or something in the works.

Remove "add extremas" filter

This should be done in the source.

Define Postscript hinting data

So one can use psautohint on OTFs to autohint the fonts.

usWeightClass in Semilight instance is incorrect

In the Glyphs source, the instance panel lists the usWeightClass value (per dropdown) at 300 instead of 350 (like Segoe UI Semilight). Need to add a custom parameter to this instance to set it to 350.

Adjust letterforms to match Segoe UI metrics/kerning

Selawik has a descending J, but Segoe UI has a standard J. If we use the same kern pairs in Selawik as Segoe UI, then Selawik has a monster huge looking space between AJ (or other caps). To make Selawik properly metrics compatible with Segoe UI, we need to change the J to be non-descending.

Also makes me wonder if there are other issues with forms that are more differentiated in Selawik.

Combining marks have nonzero advance widths

Glyph IDs 323, 324, 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 330, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335, 336, 337, 338, 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 349, 351, 353, 354, 355.

Related, for some reason Aogonek and uogonek are marked as marks in output TTFs...

This repo is missing important files

There are important files that Microsoft projects should all have that are not present in this repository. A pull request has been opened to add the missing file(s). When the pr is merged this issue will be closed automatically.

Microsoft teams can learn more about this effort and share feedback within the open source guidance available internally.

Italics/Obliques?

I was wondering if italic or oblique styles were planned, as Segoe UI has those and a true replacement typeface for Segoe UI therefore should support them.
