Rework callbacks with WM_CHAR etc as they cant modify wParam and pass this back currently, so no way to adjust a key stroke to auto uppercase it for example. Needs more thought on how to accomplish this properly.

Two possible solutions:

1. Handle everything in edit control myself, and provide extra functionality to specify the format of text that is allowed in the edit control: hex, uppercase, lowercase, alphanumeric, or combinations of, etc etc.

2. Implement a function call that user must make just before return from the callback function (similar to DefWindowProc - DefLVSubItemEdit? - need to preserve eax on return) that passes wParam, which we catch somehow and then use from that point on as we return to the edit control subclass message processing.

As per raymond chen's blog post: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20040419-00/?p=39753 and this post: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/jfoscoding/2006/08/02/win32-activation-and-focus/ its more suitable to use WM_NCACTIVATE to do validation before losing control focus and we can use WM_NCACTIVATE to prevent focus loss if custom validation proc returns false.
