Looks like if you have both the variable and the TTF version of the font installed, it is impossible to distinguish by name between the two, only the filename varies, but the font name inside the font doesn't:
Cinzel-Regular.ttf
Family: Cinzel
Subfamily: Regular
Full name: Cinzel Regular
PostScript name: Cinzel-Regular
Cinzel[wght].ttf
Family: Cinzel
Subfamily: Regular
Full name: Cinzel Regular
PostScript name: Cinzel-Regular
This is not what you usually get. For instance for the Adobe Source Serif 4 you have:
SourceSerif4-Regular.otf
Family: Source Serif 4
Subfamily: Regular
Full name: Source Serif 4
PostScript name: SourceSerif4-Regular
SourceSerif4Variable-Roman.otf
Family: Source Serif 4 Variable
Subfamily: Regular
Full name: Source Serif 4 Variable
PostScript name: SourceSerif4Variable-Roman
which makes it possible to instantiate either the fixed or the variable font distinguishing in between the two by name.

I'm using Cinzel in a website, but the ñ does not work, instead an empty space appears.
Hey, when embedding the font from Google Fonts we notice that the font appears different on iPhone than on desktop: just recently the letter i has a dot on iPhone. I attach two screenshots from Google Fonts (iPhone and Mac).
I just converted the TTF from this Github Repo to WOFF2 and host it myself now, and the i-dot is gone again. So I think the dot is unintentional and there is an issue with the font hosted at Google Fonts.
