exo-1.0's Introduction

Exo 2016

A refresh of the Exo 1.0 family, which has been serving from Google Fonts for mostly display use. My update mainly involves spacing and proportions. For this, I’ve reduced the current file scope to four masters, Thin and Black in upright and italic.

Building

Fonts are built automatically by GitHub Actions - take a look in the "Actions" tab for the latest build.

If you particularly want to build fonts manually on your own computer, you will need to install the yq utility. On OS X with Homebrew, type brew install yq; on Linux, try snap install yq; if all else fails, try the instructions on the linked page.

Then:

  • make build will produce font files.
  • make test will run FontBakery's quality assurance tests.
  • make proof will generate HTML proof files.

Weight Axis variable font

@NDISCOVER

Hi Natanael,

As you know from the previous post on the Exo 2.0 repo.
https://github.com/TypeNetwork/Exo-2.0

The Google fonts team would also love to see a variable fonts version of Exo 1.0.

As Google Fonts has commissioned @TypeNetwork to work on upgrading Exo 1.0 to be variable fonts with a single weight axis, we have made a fork off this git repository.

The process will be the same as with Exo 2.0. We will be converting the source data from its previous format to UFO. The new source data will be generated in the RoboFont environment using fontmake and ttfautohint. There is a path using gftools to move between the Glyphs and Robofont environment.

As before we will be looking to improve any errors while preserving how the font appears and renders on different platforms.

The upgrade will be completed for you in the near future. When the proposed final font is approved by Google they will accept a pull request.

We hope this answers some of your questions about the process. Please let us know if you have received this letter, and if you have any additional comments.

Best Regards,

Jill Pichotta
