Here's what my hand crafted file looks like. This is what is read into my shuffle program.

3 Spanish Archer 14/1 =
7 Al Muffrih 13/8 Fav =
6 The Trader 4/1 2Fav =
5 Indianapolis 12/1 =
2 Glencadam Glory 11/1 =
1 Dubai Future 5/1 =
8 Groveman 7/1 =
4 Frankuus 25/1 =

Flat text file in order that the horses finished.

Number at the start is the horse number. You seem to be stripping that out of the name. Don't need the position number.

Ideally all the same length, determined by longest, with an "=" at the end.

The above would be my wishlist, but the main thing I need that is missing is the horse number. That's important....
