Cool! I'm glad this is working for you.

Provisioning is the next item on our to do list. Currently we're using a VM template and deploy new VM's from that template. We'd like to create an Ubuntu Precise VM, install Puppet and covert it to a template. We'd then use Vagrant to deploy from the template and provision.

I'd give a similar approach a shot, which involves basically what you've described. On your ESX, create a new VM with an Ubuntu Precise image, set up the VM according to the Vagrant documentation, specifically add an SSH key for the vagrant user and install Chef. Then, convert the VM to a template. You won't need to build a box file with a vmdk since the vSphere box file only needs to include a metadata.json file which specifies the provider. Although, you can add the name of your template and other vSphere information. After you've got the VM template set up, configure chef in your Vagrantfile, run vagrant up, and see what happens.

I'm really curious to know if it works for you or not. If you find any errors, create a pull request with any fixes you might have. Regardless, please share the results.
