Human Phenotype Ontology Internationalization Effort

We are in the process of forming the Human Phenotype Ontology Internationalization Effort (HPOIE) at the moment, and its final organisation is yet to be determined. The (provisional) purpose of the HPOIE is to coordinate the translation efforts surrounding the Human Phenotype Ontology. This entails:

1. Fostering collaboration between different groups translating the same language.
2. Standardising the representation of the translation profiles, capturing rich metadata that can be used by downstream sources to seperate, for example, professional, manual translations from automated ones.
3. Coordinating the release of language profiles in step with HPO releases.

It is our vision that eventually we can break down language barriers entirely and enable not only cross-border phenotyping (for example in national rare disease registries) but also cross-border ontology curation.

Curation

The HPOEI does not concern itself at all with curating translations (i.e. how to actually do the translations). We support two formats for curation:

1. XLIFF, as exported by Crowdin. We support an HPO translation community here: https://crowdin.com/project/hpo-translation. Reach out on the issue tracker if you want to join any of the teams on Crowdin.
2. Babelon TSV files on Google sheets. The format is table-based and closely aligned with xliff. We use it internally to manage language translations. This is the recommended format if you choose to use Google sheets to manage your translations.

Currently only Crowdin and Babelon TSV is supported by the HPOEI, but feel free to reach out if you wish to submit your translations in a different format.

Sorting out attribution in language profiles

We should have a standard mechanism to simply annotate a translation using the organisation financing the translation, and the person performing the translation.

Should we add translation updates and XLIFF files right to the HPO release

I think it may not be a bad idea to add a babelon translation profile and XLIFF file template to every release that be downloaded and processed for teams managing releases.

Rename Translation Effort

@pnrobinson suggestions to rename the overarching translation effort

so that this beautiful akronym can be used: HPOetic

Proposal: translate "label" and "definition", and curate "synonym"

I hereby propose that we officially seperate the translation of "label" and "synonym" properties in HPO from the curation of additional synonyms in a target language. Concretely: We do not attempt to literally translate synonyms from language into another. We simply say: if, in your language, this concept has another synonym, add it. This is also reflected by @drseb current practice in crowding, where we do not keep exact track of synonym curations either.

Vote:

• 👍 : I agree, we should not translate synonyms directly from English, but curate them separately
• 👎 : I disagree, we should try to translate all English synonyms directly

Review translation status

Hey @Bruno-Orpha-Paris

I was thinking for translation status, we have these three categories:

• CANDIDATE: "The translation has been suggested from an entity (algorithm, person) outside the core team managing the translation."
• UNDER_REVIEW: "The translation has been suggested from an entity (algorithm, person) inside the core team managing the translation, but not yet officially ratified."
• OFFICIAL: "The translation has been accepted by the core team managing the language profile."

What do you think? The idea is to, every time a label changes, revert a translation from OFFICIAL to CANDIDATE.

Towards the second release of french language profile: differential file

Dear Nico @matentzn,

As Bruno @Bruno-Orpha-Paris has completed the first huge task of translating in French all the preferential terms (label) in our shared list, I would like to start working towards generating a differential file with the latest HPO released version, in order to be up to date with all the preferential terms for a second possible french language profile release. For this new version, we will also start working on synonyms, after completing the label differential.

Could you please instruct me on how to generate this file?

Make a first release of french language profile

As a proof of concept, we want to iterate fast to make a first release of a language profile.

@Bruno-Orpha-Paris are you still on slack? We should touch base on this soon. For now, can you let me know when the table is ready for me to do a first draft release?
