In Chicago, a student's chance of getting into the city's top, selective schools depends on where he or she lives. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) places every part of the city into one of four socio-economic "tiers" and requires selective schools to reserve the same number of spots for the students from each tier. This tool helps you find what CPS tier you are in.

cps-tiers's Issues

Seeing local Tiers after address search

Currently when I enter in my address the map geocodes it and zooms to that spot on the map, and display only the the tier the address fall within. I'd like to browse around and view the tiers of local census tracts, but now I can't.

You could just remove the filtering, since the zoom and pin drop do a good job of "filtering" segments near the geocoded address visually.

incorrect Census demographic data

A user pointed out a big discrepancy in our census information.

Tier 17031030603 (306.03) is listed as Tier 2, but has a median household income of $58,281.

According to CPS's own census data and Census Explorer, the median income for this tract is more like $26,357

We are currently using 2010 census data for our map, which should definitely be updated. But even so, it's strange that we have a 2x difference between a two year period.

Discussion of noise in year to year updates of CPS

CPS recalculates the tiers every year using popstats and previous year test scores of students from a census tract.

Both types of data are noisy.

Might be worth adding a discussion of this noise. Effective visualisation might be to show linecharts for each tier that has changed in the past four years or so. Many of these will bounce around.

Update for 2013 Tiers

I've merged the new Tiers into the other Fusion Tables but the original Fusion Tables are not public so I can't see the map symbology used. I'm also not sure how we want to handle the Tier Differences page now that there are 3 years worth of data.
