No response from X-Plane server - any configuration required?

I have the demo program from the README compiled and running. I'm having it connect to a remote server rather than the loopback, but other than that, the code is unchanged. No firewall. X-Plane is running (airplane is idling on the ramp) but no output from the demo and no changes in the sim.

Is there some configuration that's required to make this work? I'm using X-Plane 11.
