The default Mapbox look is best, if something like that is available. That should be default.

If you find some free Mapbox (or similarly) styled tile server, gnome-maps folks are definitely interested as well. In the end we settled with Mapquest Open as a rendering that is at least slightly more sane than the default rendering. It is still too cluttered though and I can't really stand the washed out colours.
Anyways, just my experience from all this, keep up the good work!
