The Ryobi 40v is higher than the nominal voltage of the batteries which is 3.6V x 10 = 36V. In other e-bike batteries, you see 36V because they multiply the nominal voltage. Ryobi market doesn't do this and goes with 40V. This is technically still true because these batteries have a range of 4.2V to 2.5V https://www.powerstream.com/p/INR18650-25R-datasheet.pdf

The batteries themselves have a Wh rating and if you do 144/4 you get 36V which is the nominal voltage of the battery.

It could be that Ryobi charges the battery to 40V and calls it 40V because that's the peak voltage.

It's a great project. It would be very helpful if the team could complete the documentation to help others build along.
The project B.O.M. and instructions are missing information about the source and specification of following components:

Motor controller
Cadence sensor (if used)
Brake sensors (if used)
Sysem info display (if used)
Throttle (if used)
