If anything goes wrong with the protocol negotiation at https://github.com/portertech/carrier-pigeon/blob/master/lib/carrier-pigeon.rb#L25 then this loop never quits. And it won't even display debugging output.

The only way I was able to debug a simple configuration error was by hacking the gem and putting a puts statement here. Yuck.

I have a private irc server (inspircd) that I can't seem to get cp to hit. I can send to our freenode room without issue but when pointed to our internal server, I invoke it and it pauses briefly before returning with no output.

Here's my test script:

irc_uri = "irc://testbot:[email protected]:6667/#private"
message = "testing"

CarrierPigeon.send(
    :uri => irc_uri, 
    :message => message, 
    :ssl => true, 
    :join => true
)

I've changed most of the details above but our password does have the !$ characters in it. Not sure if this could cause issues.

(This is totally not your fault - it's because Ruby 1.8.5 sucks - I thought it was important to note here in case someone else stumbled across it).

On Ruby 1.8.5 the `instance_variable_defined?' method does not exist and addressable/uri uses this method. Hence on Ruby 1.8.5 you get:

undefined method `instance_variable_defined?' for #<Addressable::URI:0xb6c9cdfc>
