The player must be really farsighted or something (and spray a lot of diluted blood when they get hurt) because the blood effect is very blurry, especially compared to the screen resolutions of many modern monitors (the source texture is only 512x).
With the focus on cleanliness in the rest of the art, the damage texture replacement here should be fairly clean and reserved, not gory and bloody like a Doom game. A simple peripheral blur pattern would likely work just fine here.
CC-BY-NC is not an open source license, so it'd be necessary to remove the uphys
assets and replace them with something permissively licensed. The files that need replacement are:
