Graphic Design Resources

Hello MUDDLERS!

Winter is here so let us bring in our toys, cozy up with our machines, and MUDDLE the cold months away! I've pulled together some GitHub originating Graphic Design Resources I thought you all might like. Let me know which are your favorites and please share all that you create! ❄️⛄❄️

primitive
By @fogleman
A command line operated (unless you've got a Mac!) primitive shape generator that transforms traditional works of art into modern masterpieces. The demonstration alone is worth popping over to this repo! 🔴🔶

Geometrize
By @Tw1ddle
A downloadable primitive shape generator (for those still hesitant at the command line but who still want in on the fun :) Again, the demonstration is reason enough to go check it out! 🔹🔵

MyPaint
By @mypaint
A no mess, no fuss painting app for artists. Features include an infinite canvas, full screen mode, tablet support, and configurable brushes. 🎨

Oblivion
By @jweinst1
Want to design graphics at the command line? Try this SVG producing programming language. Not for the faint of heart, but the results could be amazing! 🌠

LyricsPoster
By @samuelmeuli
This free web app lets you create posters of your favorite artists composed from their lyrics! Could be a fun gift for anyone thinking about (or dreading) the season of gift-giving. 🎁

MUDDLER Introductions (2018-19 Season)

Hello MUDDLERS!

Now that we have a good number of neighbors in the sandbox, I'd love it if we could take a moment and introduce ourselves! If you could include your preferred methods of composition (graphic art, digital art, poetry, fiction, video games, music, video, etc.), your experience with Git and GitHub, and where you're from I think that would be a great start! Please also link to your existing MUDDLE contributions, any publicly hosted works, websites, blogs, or social media accounts so we can find you in the ether! 🌠

In case you want to follow MUDDLE:

Dear MUDDLErs,

Becca and I wanted to write up a little something to encourage connections in the MUDDLE community across various social media platforms. After scanning our most recent posts and neighbors' posts, we came up with the following hashtags to increase traffic in the backyard:

#muddlewithme
#muddlemag
#muddleOn
#muddlesandbox
#shareyourprocess
#artinprogress
#neighBBoard
#nuttyNeighbor

To tag the Mag, use @muddle_mag and to tag BitByteBit use @publishing_bitbytebit

Please feel free to add any hashtags you think apply to your work and share any accounts, lists, or topics you think we should be following! Wishing you all the best.

Writing Resources

Hello MUDDLERS!

I was perusing the wonderful land of GitHub and I came across some interesting composition resources I thought you might enjoy! Let me know which are your favorites and, please, document your process! Always nice to give members of the GitHub community some traction on their hard work. 🔨

ZenPen
Created by @tholman
This application allows you to compose, invert (for less strained visibility), set a target word count, and save your textual work, then download it as Markdown, HTML, or Plain Text. I found writing in this application to be a very enjoyable experience. 👍

Nulis
Created by @raymestalez
This is an open source tree editor for writers. It allows you to hierarchically organize information as trees. Who knows the creative potential for something like that! 🌲

funbook
Created by @egoist
This is (to the best of my knowledge) a static website generator that is specifically designed for composing books or multi-chapter works. If anyone figures out how to get this up and running please let me know. 😍

Poet Assistant
Created by @caarmen
This is a mobile app with a built-in dictionary, thesaurus, rhyming dictionary, composition window, and text-to-speech read back features. Fun mobile-poetry potential here for sure! 📱

blackout
Created by @mkremins
An auto-poem generator that blacks out web page text and leaves you with something to muse over. Very intriguing and certainly worth adding to your toolbar. 🙈

Praise and gratitude!

I'm not sure where to put this but I just want to send some love and gratitude for the wonderful work of @taylorcate and @RJP43! I dug around in the MUDDLE Wiki this morning and found such lovely things! Rebecca's "Why Muddle" article positively gave me the connection tingles the deeper I went, including but not limited to the quotes which she beautifully attributed to Taylor! So many blooming things in there. Also the Techtual Condition by Taylor, so clear, compassionate and courageous... I love it all.

I also saw in MUDDLE workflows (and previously, heard via email from Taylor just before that) that MUDDLing direct via Github is coming soon and I'm excited! (Although, Taylor's inspiring vision of multiple humanities command-lining have me looking brightly up another tall mountain of possibility!) Anyway, thanks for all of this, and sending love your way for continued wonders to blossom here in this loamy sand. ❤️🎉

🐖 Making Lifelong Messes - An Invitation

Dearest Friends and MUDDLErs,

MUDDLE's management has been on a break these past few weeks and I wanted to pop on here to give some sort of explanation. I realized quickly that the reason is more complicated than "we've been busy" or "we've been focusing on other things" and so I hope you'll bear with me as I attempt to write something a little more honest.

For those of you who don't know, MUDDLE's Technical Editor, @RJP43, and I just graduated with our Master's degrees in Textual Studies and Digital Humanities. Anyone you ask will define Digital Humanities differently—just check out Jason Heppler's What is Digital Humanities? if you don't believe me—and this variability and indeterminancy follows those that study DH wherever they go. For me DH has become a lifelong pursuit of process. Whether it be art, music, composition, daily life, or human existence more generally, I want to know how you do it because I'm interested in what makes us tick. Like a child tracing cracks in the sidewalk with chalk, I use the tools at hand to reveal our human tendency to make mistakes. (If you visit this comment's revision history you'll see exactly what I mean.) ☝️

I realized that I want to know others' processes because I'm trying to find tools to decipher myself—to understand my motivations and transform my actions into steps forward instead of backward. Most of our social media spaces and virtual communities "thrive" on touch ups and false realities, and this internet infatuation with impossible standards is overwhelming and unhelpful. Through GitHub, we've created a community that breeds positivity and fallibility in equal measure, and we thank every one of you for your bravery and commitment to this project. We set out to make a magazine and discovered a whole new way of thinking. 🌌

Occupied with this new-wav[y]e thinking, we forgot to make a magazine. 😰 (always making messes, always learning) We thought we might do something a bit clever instead but that's not totally unlike what we originally had in mind...did you follow that?

With your help, we want to collect and share our community's best interactions on our MUDDLE Issues Board for the "official" first Issue of MUDDLE Mag. 👏 If you could, please, send us via Insta, Twitter, or GitHub up to 🔟 MUDDLE interactions/artworks/processes you'd like us to feature in the first Issue. The deadline is June 30th and the Issue will arrive in time for Independence Day! 🎆

Be sure to check out @muddle_mag on Insta for examples of what we're looking for. 👁️ Please let me know if you run into any trouble or if you have any questions! Always here and happy to help.

💗

Sincerely, Tay

When we live we make big messes. It's unavoidable, and we need to show others that they aren't alone in the mud.
