I think the variables have a precision which is too good to be true. It's may be correctly read but then stored as a wrong type (float64 or so).

What license should be used for DOPpy when published?

DOPpy.py imports

from __future__ import division  # supports true division for Python 2.7

from warnings import warn
import numpy as np
import bz2
import gzip
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

Except for numpy and matplotlib these should be build-in modules of Python.
Which versions of numpy and matplotlib are the minimum requirement?
